Designing fibers with a certain modal profile may lead to improved performance. We demonstrate that it is possible to derive the index profile from the desired modal characteristics. Along with an efficient beam propagation code, the procedure may expedite the development of special fibers. © 2003 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
