1 February 2004 Motion estimation through the atmosphere using spatiotemporal Fourier transform

The movement description of translating targets in time-varying images detected through the atmosphere is a relevant topic with application in many different fields. The technique consisting of the evaluation of the spatiotemporal Fourier transform of a sequence of frames is applied to images distorted by the atmospheric turbulence and partially compensated using an adaptive optics system. The technique accuracy for estimating the object velocity is checked using simulated low-light-level images. This analysis comprises the effect of the object light level and that of the correction degree provided by adaptive optics on the motion estimation.
