We demonstrate a simple technique for determining numerical values of carrier lifetimes and linewidth enhancement factors in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) for various SOA input optical powers. For this purpose we use SOA self-gain modulations and the conversion of frequency modulation to intensity modulation. © 2004 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
