1 January 2005 Distortion-free technique for parallel autostereoscopic projection with a single projection lens

Abstract
A new optical architecture of a multiview projection display based on a mirrored light tunnel is presented. The light tunnel is made of two or four parallel plane mirrors, placed between an image projector and a directional screen. An arbitrary number of perspective images are projected by a single image projector being arranged in rows and columns in a certain order. The images appear superimposed on the screen due to the folding of the projection beam by the mirrored tunnel. Working in this way, the mirrored tunnel does not cause any image distortion. The directional screen for autostereoscopic imaging incorporates a slanted directional diffuser. The presented technique allows both autostereoscopic and full parallax image projection. A six-view autostereoscopic display with image resolution of 768×341 has been built in accordance with this new optical concept and tested.
