Abstract
We investigate the process of generating graded-index plastic optical fibers by thermal diffusion of dopants in multistep-core fibers formed by layered extrusion. The layer thicknesses and their dopant concentrations are varied for two-step-core fibers to determine the values that, after the completion of the diffusion process, result in a desired dopant distribution optimized for maximum bandwidth of graded-index fibers. Our solution of the relevant diffusion equation by the explicit finite-difference method is verified against an analytical solution from the literature and two cases of fibers with diffused profiles, one with a two-step and the other with six-step core. The conclusions reached provide a guideline for the design of graded-index plastic fibers and enable prediction of the fiber bandwidth.
