Abstract
Current mobile devices such as smartphones are expected to contain high-resolution cameras that include a multitude of features in ever slimmer form factors. These cameras are expected to have a wide field of view, image stabilization, fast auto-focus and a sense of depth to enable depth-of-field effects or gesture recognition. However, physical laws limit straight-forward miniaturization of these cameras.

A folded multi-aperture design with a segmented field of view and laterally trimmed optics promises to deliver the same performance and features in a package that is half the height of a traditional optics module. Only mature technologies such as injection-molded lenses and voice coil motors are necessary to realize this system.

In this work, we present results from our first technological demonstration units. We show that trimming the typical front-stop design lenses of smartphone camera modules only reduces their field of view, without compromises to optical performance in the central field. We discuss how mirror placement affects the behaviour of the system in unexpected ways. Finally, we follow the process of calibrating the demonstration units and outline the challenges in processing the channel images to generate a seamless complete image for all scenes.
