Abstract
The CSIR is currently involved in the research and development of an optical gas imaging camera to detect and locate hazardous industrial gasses specifically sulphur hexafluoride and volatile organic compounds. The ability to see very faint and small concentrations of gas is difficult due to the noise equivalent delta temperature of the detector. Extensive post image processing is required to improve the visibility of the gas. Various image processing techniques, including non-uniform correction, contrast, image subtraction and optical flow, will be investigated and compared to find the best method for optical gas detection.
