13 December 2020 Trigger system for the ComPair instrument

Abstract
This paper describes a trigger system for the ComPair instrument. For an incident event, each detector subsystem initiates data digitization process with its internal hit signal and sends the hit signal to the trigger module. The trigger module generates a trigger acknowledge signal from combinations of subsystem hit information to select gamma-ray events and unbiased sampled events. The trigger module also generates an event identification number for each acknowledged event and sends to each subsystem to reconstruct the event afterward. We employed an FPGA development board (ZC706, Xilinx) as a main body of the trigger module and developed an FPGA Mezzanine Card to interface with each subsystem. The peta-linux runs on the FPGA controls the trigger module. Two TCP servers on the linux handles commanding and data transfer from/to a DAQ machine. We confirmed that the trigger module could accept event rates up to 12 kHz with Lenovo ThinkPad T340S. The communication test with the other subsystems are ongoing for the upcoming beam test and a balloon flight.
