Abstract
The Electronic Wide Angle Camera System (EWACS) enables for the first time the real-time generation of high-resolution, wide-angle (140°), high-speed, low-altitude, tactical aerial imagery and auxiliary data for display at a ground station. The high performance and broad angular coverage are achieved by using a scanning prism and imaging of the scene onto a linear charge-coupled device (CCD). The solid-state, electro-optical recon sensor is suitable for use in high performance manned aircraft or RPV's with its small size (0.7 ft3 ), weight (35 lb) and power (95 W) requirements. The recon sensor demonstrated a bench performance level equivalent to the resolution of a 0.7-foot target at a 1000-foot range for a low-contrast, low-light level condition, while the overall system capability is reduced by a factor of about two due to scan converter limitations. These performance levels were maintained throughout dynamic analyzer and flight testing programs. The EWACS evaluation has validated the system concept and verified that program objectives have been met as demonstrated throughout 14 flights which provided reliable operation and excellent imagery of resolution and tactical targets.
