Abstract
Introducing either a uniform square shaped or chirped sinusoidal corrugation onto the gain and/or the refractive index of an optical fiber, it is theoretically investigated that extremely high-gain optical fiber amplifier is feasible for optical communication, signal processing, and measurement fields. A gain of more than 15 dB is obtainable with the gain corrugation (Delta) (gamma) equals 0.05/m around a specific corrugation period (xi) equals 0.333 in comparison with a uniform gain fiber. Inducing the index corrugation (Delta) n in addition to (Delta) (gamma) tends to shorten the effective fiber length for yielding the same gain. Furthermore, introducing the chirping into the gain corrugation, its transmission gain is more enhanced by about 5 dB and tolerance of the setting of the corrugation period (xi) is rather relaxed with wider spectrum bandwidth.
