Abstract

Fourier optics, with early developments in the 1940s through the early 1960s, was introduced to optics educators largely through the appearance in 1968 of the book Introduction to Fourier Optics by Joseph Goodman. Over the past three decades evolutionary changes in perspective on the subject and its teaching have led to changes in the classroom, and continuing can be expected. This paper presents the historical background for those evolutionary changes and documents some of them. It concludes with a discussion of directions the teaching of this important subject might take.
