Abstract
In this article, we present recent advances in the development of spin wave logic devices utilizing spin waves for information transmission and processing. In particular, we describe the major components and the principle of operation of spin wave devices, possible logic gates for general and special task data processing, and provide an overview of the most notable experimental works demonstrating the operation of spin wave devices. One of the distinctive features of this approach is the ability to code logic 0 and 1 into the phase (0 or π) of the propagating spin wave and exploit wave interference for logic gate construction. This provides a fundamental advantage over the conventional transistor-based logic circuitry allowing us to build more functional logic gates with a fewer number of elements. We present the estimates on the potential functional throughput enhancement and compare it with the scaled CMOS. The shortcoming and potentials issues are also discussed.
