Abstract
Several techniques have been developed and successfully used to measure the imaging quality of cathode ray tubes but, unfortunately, there are no generally accepted techniques for measuring the imaging quality of discrete element displays. This tutorial style paper considers the historical and state-of-the-art aspects of both raster-scanned type displays and discrete-element type displays in an attempt to delineate the metrics used to specify the required static and dynamic characteristics of electro-optical displays. At the theoretical level as well as the practical level, there seems to be only a few metrics which are not applicable to both types of displays. Therefore, the basic recommendation is that a technology-independent methodology be pursued for specifying and measuring the imaging quality of electro-optical displays. The basis for such a methodology is proposed which uses empirical, psychophysical and direct techniques, or a combination thereof, for the metrics and measurement.
