1 September 1993 Polarization-splitting polished fiber optic couplers

Abstract
Fiber optic polarization splitters are demonstrated in polarization-maintaining fiber, using polished-type fiber couplers having intermediate copper thin-film layers. The splitters operate to give four port-symmetric 19-dB polarization isolation with less than 1-dB TM coupling loss. The effects of asymmetric longitudinal displacements on the devices are considered, and positional asymmetry is used to realize higher perlormance 1 x 2 port devices, with up to 25 dB isolation and 0.5 dB loss.
