Abstract
A novel optical mode-switching device is proposed and theoretically demonstrated with a coupled triple-stripe semiconductor laser structure. The switching operation results from electrically controlling the laser lateral modes. It generates an effective far-field pattern switching useful for fiber optic systems or systems using small objective apertures.
