SC028: Disease Diagnostics Using Ophthalmic Light Scattering
In this course, new non-invasive technologies are discussed for the earliest possible detection of ocular (cataracts, environmental toxicity, uveitis, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration) and other diseases (diabetes, cholesterol, and possibly Alzheimer's). Optical technologies (slit-lamp bio-microscopy, Scheimpflug imaging, and fundus photography) can be used for the evaluation of structure and physiology in health, aging, and disease. The discussion on optical techniques includes dynamic light scattering, fluorometry, polarimetry, laser-Doppler flowmetry, and Raman scattering. Hands-on activities are also planned. These include "looking into your own body through your own eyes," performing a dynamic light scattering experiment, demonstration of a natural fluorescence camera, and corneal topography used in refractive surgery.
