Abstract
The high proportion and large-scale access of new energy sources urgently requires the development of energy storage and other measures to enhance flexible regulation and electrical energy storage capacity. Pumped storage is currently recognized as the safest, most stable, most mature, most environmentally friendly and most economical way of energy storage, with the advantages of conventional synchronous power supply network source coordination. Vigorous development of pumped storage is of great importance and far-reaching significance to better serve the goal of "peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality " and to ensure the safety of new power systems. By the end of 2020, China has 31.79 million kilowatts of pumped storage in operation and 50.63 million kilowatts in construction, which is the largest scale of pumped storage in operation and construction in the world. However, overall, the proportion of pumped storage in China's total installed power supply is still low, at 1.8%, and there is a big gap compared with the advanced level abroad, which still needs to be accelerated in the future. A re-examination of the functional positioning of pumped storage development will help to achieve the safe and healthy development of China's pumped storage industry and promote the goal of " peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality ".
