Abstract
To explore the effect of the root system of the caragana on the resistance of loess slopes to freeze-thaw erosion in a high altitude seasonal permafrost zone.This study combined freeze-thaw cycling and direct shear tests to observe the effect of root systems on the shear strength, internal friction angle and cohesion of root-soil composites.In this study, a direct shear simulation of the root-soil complex was established by combining the numerical simulation technology of PFC3D particle flow, and the fine-scale parameters of the root-soil complex after freeze-thaw erosion were calibrated with reference to the indoor test results. This study compares and analyses the effect of caragana root content on the resistance of loess to freezethaw erosion, using loess without roots as a reference group, and investigates the mechanism of caragana root reinforcement of loess. The results show that the freeze-thaw cycle has a degrading effect on the cohesion and shear strength of loess and a strengthening effect on the angle of internal friction; the presence of caragana roots reduces the degrading effect of freeze-thaw on the cohesion and shear strength of loess and reduces the strengthening effect on the angle of internal friction; there is an optimum root content of caragana roots in improving the shear strength of loess and a limit value in improving the cohesion of loess.
