Abstract
Meniscus height measurement for dry-eye syndrome detection using a smartphone and an LED ring light that is small, inexpensive, and portable. A circular image of the ring light is reflected at the center of the eye, and a distorted crescent-shaped image appears on the tear meniscus where the tears collect. The diameter of the reflected circle on the cornea and height of the crescent-shaped circle reflected on the meniscus are measured through image processing, which includes binarization, circle detection, and removal of unnecessary connected components. The variation in meniscus height caused by the difference in distance between the smartphone and the eye is divided by the diameter and normalized. We further present experimental results that demonstrate that our method is as effective as a system using medical equipment.
