The present paper reports about the effect of plasticizers on the performance of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer (EPDM) in high voltage DC cable system applications. The influence of the chemical structure and content of oil was studied. It was demonstrated that the choice of the right plasticizers is crucial for obtaining end products with desired properties. These products must meet not only the processing requirements but also mechanical and electrical performance demands. Two types of plasticizers have been researched for EPDM/silica compounds, and it concluded that paraffin oil is selected for EPDM composite with less than 30 phr silica filler. While naphthenic oil is suggested for EPDM composite with 30phr silica filler or more to achieve high DC breakdown voltage, because of better compatibility with EPDM rubber.
