Abstract
To address the challenge of determining the optimal median opening length in the multi-lane conversion of expressway renovation and expansion projects, this study presents a novel universal calculation model. The model is developed based on an analysis of vehicle driving stability and the geometric relationship of the road alignment at the median opening conversion section. Furthermore, a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model is established to assess the traffic operational status of vehicles traversing the median opening conversion section, utilizing the developed median opening length model. Taking into consideration both safety and efficiency, key indicators, including time occupancy rate, speed consistency, and travel delay, are selected for evaluation. The research results demonstrate that the developed model for the length of the median opening in multi-lane transition can ensure the operational status of vehicles in the transition section. This contribution has significant implications for the planning and execution of expressway renovation and expansion projects, providing valuable insights for determining the optimal median opening length.
