Abstract
A new computer memory using a laser beam to impress dimples on a standard sized credit card has been devised and tested. The card contains approximately 2 megabytes of memory with associated software which provides random access and can be written upon or read with a personal computer equipped with a simple device. Software has been developed to place a complete medical record on the card and update it at encounters with the health care system. The complete system has been under test in an ambulatory patient clinic and has proven to be highly satisfactory. This paper presents details of the software, hardware and of the evaluation of the system.
