Abstract
A variety of approaches that are available for the attempt to add target recognition capability to the usual radar functions of surveillance and track are discussed. These approaches include the utilization of fine-resolution, wide-bandwidth Doppler techniques for the recognition of moving targets, high and ultra-high range resolution and polarimetric techniques for the recognition of stationary targets, and high cross-range resolution techniques for the recognition of both moving and stationary targets. Definitions of the levels of recognition that may be attempted as well as the fundamentals of recognition system design, development, and test are provided.
