Abstract
The characteristics and applications of an optical switch are described, which uses a thermo-optic effect in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer type waveguide device. One possible application is automatic loop 1 or loop C testing of OCUs or DSUs on an optical line for changes in applied electrical power, whose tests can be conducted including optical line loss.
