Abstract
This paper presents a new approach to stereo correspondence, i.e., stereo background using the Hough transform. The common projection process is reversed so that the stereo images are backprojected onto the actual objects in the original scene. Since indiscriminant backprojections would result in numerous false targets together with the actual objects, a Hough method is employed to decide the correct backprojected surfaces of the objects. When ambiguities occur among candidate matchings, the accumulated votes of their background planes serve as resolving criterion for the best matchings. The local processing nature of the Hough transform is exploited for the parallel implementation in transputers. Experimental results are presented and feasible extensions to this work are also discussed.
