23 December 1980 Three-Dimensional Autonomous Scene Matching

Abstract
There has been increased emphasis in recent years to provide very accurate delivery of non-nuclear weapons against strategic targets. Goodyear Aerospace Corporation (GAC) under contract to the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) has participated in development of an Autonomous Terminal Homing (ATH) system to provide the required accuracy. The requirement for the ATH system is to provide accurate three-dimensional position measurement of a low-flying cruise missile as it converges on a target. Accurate position measurement and missile guidance requires that the three-dimensional characteristics of a target area be utilized during the processing of onboard sensor data. The processes and requirements for three-dimensional position measurement are reviewed. Critical relationships between scene signature content and sensor data quality are described. An illustration of sensor data processing is shown.
