Abstract
This paper suggests how two inverse problems can be solved using topology optimization methods. The first problem consists of designing materials with optimal or special properties such as maximum stiffness to weight ratios or negative Poisson's ratio materials. The second problem consists of designing optimal compliant micromechanism for use in MicroElectroMechanical Systems. The proposed material microstructures and compliant micromechanisms have been manufactured using micromachining techniques and they show the expected behavior in tests.
