Abstract
Neutron response functions of two commercially available cylindrical 4He proportional counters have been measured in the neutron energy range from 500 to 8000 KeV. Experimental results are compared with calculated response functions, determined by Monte Carlo integration. Optimum operating conditions are determined and the detectors are calibrated both for energy and resolution. Energy and resolution calibration functions are expressed in terms of the stopping power of the charged particles in the detector. This allows the implementation of these functions in the Monte Carlo code GNSR, which has been developed of the calculation of response functions and efficiencies of gas- filled neutron detectors.
