Abstract
With the use of recently developed dilatometric cell pVT data are established for the crystalline, nematic and isotropic phases of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) up to 300 MPa. A stable and a metastable crystal form can be distinguished. Previous dielectric measurements on 5CB2 are extended to higher temperatures with the aid of new dielectric cells, and to higher frequencies that allows one to analyze in more detail the dielectric properties in the isotropic phase. From the dielectric relaxation in the nematic and isotropic phases we derive the activation quantities in the usual way. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of pVT data which are indispensable to separate the different influences of temperature and density.
