Abstract
Originally designed for data communication, the Internet is being considered for real-time voice and video communication (in applications such as telephony, voice conferencing, videophone and video conferencing). In order to become a legitimate alternative to the traditional circuit-switched telephone network, the internet must guarantee toll quality for voice communication, which translates into stringent requirements on voice packets, in particular in terms of delay, loss rate and service availability. In this paper, we seek to assess voice delay in the Internet. In this respect, we use network simulation to derive the end-to-end delay incurred by voice traffic for various network scenarios (i.e. path lengths, link bandwidths) and loading conditions, using different encoding and packetization schemes. As a consequence of the tradeoffs revealed by the delay results obtained, we propose a simple mechanism for end-to-end bandwidth management and admission control for voice streams.
