Abstract
With Internet traffic doubling every nine months, demand will only increase pressure to deliver all-optical networking (see Figure 1. Network Life Cycle (Yesterday)). Every technology lifetime follows the typical introduction, deployment, and obsolescence. Presently, optical transport technology, growing tenfold each year, is outpacing microprocessor technology. This has allowed optical technology performance to exceed Moore's Law, which assumed microprocessor speed would double every eighteen months.
