Abstract
We describe a practical realisation of a coding unit for binary document treatment. The coding procedure used is a modification of an arithmetic code discussed by Langdon and Rissanen, which reaches a compression factor almost 30% higher than the two-dimensional CCITT code with k = 4 . Hardware has been developed capable of encoding or decoding an A4 binary document, scanned with a 200 pixels/inch resolution in less than 1 second.
