Abstract
This paper reports on the concept, software and design of a laboratory model of an autonomous guided vehicle, i.e. a freely moving robot that orients itself in space with the aid of fixed passive optical beacons and follows a path, as given by coordinate points previously stored in its memory. Communication to a base station takes place via a digital radio link. Commands are received and status is reported back. The goal is to design a system that can be implemented essentially with existing technology and will not have to rely on optical pattern recognition from a television camera - an approach certainly more elegant, but at the present time rather immature.
