Abstract
A holocamera was designed to resolve minute, high-velocity particles. The holocamera was used in conjunction with a light gas gun to investigate the phenomena resulting from the impact of a hypersonic ballistic model with a stationary water droplet. The holocamera used a Q-switched ruby laser light source having an output of 0.25 Joules at 694.3 nm wavelength. The pulse was chopped by means of a pockels cell and a glans polarizer to provide a pulse of 3-5 ns (FWHM). This pulse was split to yield two colinear twin pulses sepa-rated by a time delay. The twin pulses were used to double expose a film plate thereby holographically recording the high-speed phenomena of graphite ejecta issuing from the site of the droplet impact on the ballistic model nosetip. Two holographic techniques were employed. The first displayed the graphite ejecta as dark images silhouetted against a light background. The second technique utilized light forward-scattered around the ejecta to display them as light images against a dark background. For selected impact events both techniques were simultaneously employed. Graphite ejecta were resolved with diameters of 10 pm traveling at velocities of approximately 6.10 km/sec relative to the holocamera.
