Present day space exploration is hindered by the limitation of propulsion systems. Light sailing has a potential to offer fast and low cost travel across the solar system and beyond. Here we discuss principles of extreme solar and laser sailing. We show that with the availability of proper materials and systems change in space exploration paradigm is possible. We then show that metamaterials are particularly studied for the design of solar and laser sails. We discuss several promising photonic designs and detail our ongoing experimental effort. Finally, we provide an outlook for future of lightsailing for space exploration.
