Abstract
This study demonstrates the gain variation of a distributed Raman amplifier (DRA) for wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) system. Experiments on a six-channel WDM system with DRA show a gain variation of less than 0.02 dB under the situation of dropping channels. Results show that the DRA system significantly improved gain variation arising from adding or dropping channels and changes in input signal power compared to an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) system. Therefore, without employing any gain stabilization methods adopted, the DRA system can support more stable gain than an EDFA system when the input signal power changes and channels are added or dropped.
