In this paper, one method for accurate evaluating EDFA small signal gain spectrum is designed. According to this method, EDFA can be regarded as a box. One can measure and determine its gain spectrum accurately by using a single continuous wavelength DFB laser and a wide spectrum light source.
Homodyne crosstalk can be divided into two kinds: coherent and incoherent crosstalk in WDM optical network. A general analyzing model of crosstalks in WDM optical network is developed in this paper. According to the model, two different kinds of crosstalks, viz. coherent crosstalk and inconherent crosstalk, are distinguished from each other. The experimental results, 1dB power penalty for about 20dB coherent and incoherent crosstalk signal well agree with theoretical one, could be important to the WDM optical network designing.
Optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM) can play an important role in WDM optical transport network systems. In this paper, we focus on the performance of using OADM integrated with pre-EDFA in multi-wavelength optical transmission networks called OADM subsystem. We calculate the receiver sensitivity incurred in an OADM subsystem with pre-EDFA. We theoretically investigate the effects of the spontaneous emission factor, and pre-amplifier gain, spontaneous emission factor, on the receiver sensitivity. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental results we have done.
Using the high frequency saturation filter effect and dynamic recovery time, the dependence of the frequency chirp and intersymbol interference ( ISI ) of a wavelength converter based on cross-phase modulation in Mach-Zehnder wavelength converter is analyzed. While the extinction ratio is kept the same for diferent probe power, for out phase converting, the poorer performance of the converted signal is due to a longer gain recovery time and the larger intersymbol interference. But for in phase converting, the high probe or fast carrier recovery time is not certain better than that of low probe power.
The effects of the position of dispersion compensation fiber on 4 X 10Gb/s WDM systems with different duty cycle are investigated. With the long amplifier spacing and large input power, no matter what the duty cycle is, the performance of the system with DCF-first is worse than that with SMF -first; The best performance can be obtained with duty cycle of 0.5, and it is independent of the position of DCF. With the short amplifier spacing and small input power, the system performance with NRZ format and DCF-first is better than that of other systems. It means that NRZ format and DCF-first should be employed in WDM system with short amplifier spacing.
A novel method of all-optical frame synchronization clock recovery is proposed for the ultra-high-speed OTDM (optical time division multiplexing) system. A wavelength different from the signal and a special time slot are used in the header of each frame to transmit the frame clock signal. At the receiver, Terahertz Optical Asymmetric Demultiplexer is used to recover the frame synchronization clock. The behaviors of 40 Gbit/s OTDM transmission systems employing this method are analyzed.
