In dynamic operational settings like the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) an astronomical observatory facility, the Monitoring and Control software continually evolves to meet emerging challenges. This necessitates a meticulous approach to tracking symptoms and variables, emphasizing the importance of experience-based software tools with usability and pre-production testability. These tools not only address immediate operational needs but also aid in precise requirement formalization, contributing to a comprehensive design process. This technical review explores the development of such tools, highlighting their role in effective solution exploration and validation. For enhanced operational safety and efficiency, particularly crucial to remote control room operations in dynamic environments.
The problem reporting and tracking system (PRTS) is the ALMA system to register operational problems, track unplanned corrective operational maintenance activities and follow the investigations of all problems or possible issues arisen in operation activities. After the PRTS implementation appeared several issues that finally produced a lack in the management of the investigations, problems to produce KPIs, loss of information, among others. In order to improve PRTS, we carried out a process to review the status of system, define a set of modifications and implement a solution; all according to the stakeholder requirements. In this work, we shall present the methodology applied to define a set of concrete actions at the basis of understanding the complexity of the problem, which finally got to improve the interactions between different subsystems and enhance the communication at different levels.
ALMA Science operations activities in Chile are responsibility of the Department of Science Operations, which consists of three groups, the Array Operations Group (AOG), the Program Management Group (PMG) and the Data Management Group (DMG). The AOG includes the Array Operators and have the mission to provide support for science observations, operating safely and efficiently the array. The poster describes the AOG process, management and operational tools.
