Profile Summary

Dr. Kees Schouhamer Immink is president and founder of Turing Machines Inc., a Dutch-based research and consulting firm that contributes to science and technology. Over the course of his career, he has contributed to the design and development of a wealth of digital video, audio, and data recorders such as the Compact Disc, Compact Disc Video, DAT, DCC, DVD, and the BluRay disc system.

He received a personal Emmy Award and the highest honors of the three major US electronics societies: the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (Edison Medal), the Audio Engineering Society (Gold Medal), and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (Progress Medal). He was inducted into the Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame. Queen Beatrix knighted him in 2000. In 2014, the University of Johannesburg conferred him an honorary doctorate. He received the 2014 Eduard Rhein Prize for Technology.

He is, since 1995, an adjunct professor at the Institute for Experimental Mathematics, University of Essen, Essen, Germany, and affiliated with the NanYang Technological University, Singapore, as a Distinguished Visiting Professor.

Immink has served in officer and board positions for a number of learned societies, government and academic organizations -such as the AES, IEEE, SMPTE, and several universities. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, AES, SMPTE, a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW), a member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), an honorary member of the Netherlands Electronics and Radio Society (NERG), and former president of the Audio Engineering Society.
